Jeans Form with Tassel

    Jeans Form with Tassel, 2018, Edition of 3, C-Print, 25″ x 33″

I like working with simple colour palettes, simplifying arrangements so that light, and shape, and texture etc. are the focus. This image is a monochromatic colour photograph. The subject matter of this still life is a jeans form. Its purpose is providing shape to jeans; to be jeans within jeans. I was interested in the specificity of the form: its textured plastic, the detail of the belt loops, pockets, fly, and its allusion to wrinkled fabric.

Amongst the other props and materials in my studio, I saw a connection between the form and the black tassel. Together their shapes are suggestive. The satin and velvet the rest enhance this suggestion.

I was thinking of Tom of Finland’s illustrations, the graphite drawings that are soft, almost out of focus: sheen of the leather, soft highlights. This image isn’t overtly sexual like his drawings. It’s less direct and humorous in its PG nature.
