Display Form, Rotating, 2021. Kinetic Sculpture. 24 x 42 in.
Display Form, Rotating uses the same subject matter and model as Display Form (insert link). A person imitates the stance from a hosiery display, standing on the balls of their feet with raised calfs. Their activated muscles show the effort required to hold the pose, contrasting the highly stylized display forms which have no definition. The legs are cast from life and accurately render muscle tone and skin texture. Animated by a concealed motor, they turn from side to side indefinitely.
I am interested in means of gaining and sustaining attention and look to advertising and retail display as source material. Incorporating movement into a static display can have an magical or hypnotic effect. I am interested in dichotomies and synthesis between the personal and commercial; real and uncanny; specific and ambiguous.
